This playground will be the first COMPLETELY accessible playground in our community. The Winslow family has been a part of both school’s communities and we are hoping you will help us honor their son Kyle. Kyle Winslow was a student at Mill Hill School from Kindergarten in 2008 until Third Grade in January of 2011. Kyle was in a wheelchair and was just learning to speak when he passed away at the age of 9. Going to school at Mill Hill was a very important part of Kyle’s life. As a child with special needs, Kyle did not have any play dates and his main interaction with other children his age was at Mill Hill School. Kyle’s siblings attended Dwight School, but Kyle could not. Mill Hill is one of the schools in Fairfield where children with special physical needs can freely move around the school. However, one area of the school where Kyle could not go freely was the playground. Kyle could not participate, play or interact with his classmates in the current playground setting. The mission of this project is to create a playground designed to give all people, regardless of their abilities, the opportunities to explore and engage in the highest levels of play together. Classmates, teachers, parents, grandparents, caregivers, and their family members should freely be able to navigate an all ability-integrated recreational facility. Equipment should be appropriate for children and families with and without mobility, developmental and sensory disabilities. This playground also allows for wheelchair accessibility. With approval from the Department of Parks and Recreation, the Winslow Family has been privately fundraising the $250,000 needed to build this playground at Mill Hill. With a groundbreaking goal of Spring 2014, the Winslow family is short approximately $70,000. We are asking our community friends and businesses to support an event being given by Mill Hill and Dwight Elementary Schools called Hoops for Hope. This friendly basketball game between the schools, with teams comprised of teachers, administrators and students will help to raise the balance of the funds needed to build this playground. Please see attached sheet to see how you can help! The Winslow Family has generously offered to match the funds donated from this event in order to begin construction this March! Please help us raise the money needed for this important project. Together, we can help the Winslow family honor Kyle and improve the community for all of our children. All donations are tax deductible. Tax id# 06-750063K.
